Ifra 2009: Strategic partnership between Muller Martini and Direct Mail Company's DM Informatik division: Increasing Efficiency in the Mailroom! Distribution-Oriented or Zone-Controlled Production?
Muller Martini is providing its customers with real added value with a management tool from the DM Informatik division of Switzerland-based Direct Mail Company. This new application enables insert processing to be optimized during production.

The new insert management tool allows Muller Martini to optimize both zones and feeders, as fewer product changes means shorter job changeover times at the insertion systems (picture shows an SLS3000).

Newspaper printing plants nowadays use distribution-oriented production processes; with production time slots being so short, bundles are produced and distributed according to routes and route sequences.
Muller Martini offers the ideal solution for such processes through its Mailroom Production Control System (MPC), which for instance can meet tight delivery-truck departure times through its highly automated and dynamic production control.

In addition to daily newspapers, more and more advertising journals and weekly newspapers are being produced to increase utilization of available capacity and to benefit from additional sources of revenue. The timing is often not as critical when producing these products, which allows for greater flexibility within the production sequence. This is where a zone-oriented production sequence becomes an option, and direct mailers are already making use of this.

Zone-Oriented Production
With the management tool created by the DM Informatik division of Switzerland-based Direct Mail Company, Muller Martini is offering a new application for producing zone-oriented products.
The new “DM-[Pro]” software enables zone sequences to be created in a way that allows job changeover times and insert changes to be optimized.

This sequence significant increases production efficiency. The number of insert changes and associated job changeovers at the inserting systems are reduced, as zones with more or less the same inserts can be processed one after the other.

Another advantage is the ability to allocate pre-defined feeders for frequently occurring inserts and those with similar attributes (such as size), meaning manual adjustments are much simpler and job changeover times are reduced even further.

Zone sequences and feeder allocations are also optimized in such a way that feeder changeovers can be carried out “on the fly” without interrupting production.

DM Informatik
DM Informatik is synonymous with comprehensive IT solutions and has built up a good reputation by virtue of the products it has successfully launched over the years in the address, subscription and direct sales sectors. Furthermore, it provides consultancy, design, and software system services for publishing houses, printing plants, and sales companies.
