Shortrun Diamant: High-performing And Versatile
During the Open House at the beginning of November, Müller Martini Buchtechnologie presented their new Diamant 35 shortrun bookline together with a Vesta jacketing machine. The productive efficiency of the shortrun bookline was demonstrated in a most convincing way. Compared to its predecessor, the machine produces 16 percent more books – and that just as versatile and perfect to the detail.

The visitors of the Open House showed great interest in the Shortrun Diamant 35 that was exhibited together with a Vesta jacketing machine.

Some short time ago, the Bad Mergentheim bookbinding machine manufacturer informed about the increased performance capabilities of their Diamant 35 shortrun bookline. The machine allows the production of 2,100 books per hour, a 16 percent improvement compared to the Diamant 30 predecessor model.

The high efficiency of the Diamant 35 pairs up with an extraordinarily high degree of automation. Ultra-fast changeovers are guaranteed, one production quickly follows the other. The Diamant 35 allows optimum utilization and ensures greatly cost-effective production.

Books with Gatefolded Flaps Can Also Be Run
Bookbinders know that with the Diamant bookline they can manufacture books with high-quality hard cases. A great number of users have been putting their trust into this innovative Müller Martini machine for years. During the Open House, many visitors were nevertheless surprised about the versatility of the high-tech machine. Set up with a Vesta jacketing machine, the new Diamant 35 this time did not produce hardcover books; Müller Martini showed the manufacture of gatefolded books with gatefolded flaps and flexible covers, the so-called full-flap books. In many countries, this kind of book is gaining in popularity as more and more readers appreciate the flexible cover, the easy opening, the good layflat behaviour and the flaps that provide information and serve as bookmarks.

For the Open House full-flap book production, the lined-up Vesta jacketing machine that day did not score jackets and fold them around the books. As the Vesta can also fold in the flaps, it is perfectly suited for the production of full-flap books. It was interesting to watch the A5 books with flexible case and open, 70-mm wide flaps enter the Vesta. The machine opened the book covers, folded in the flaps and finally reclosed the books – and carried that out at full production speed.

Efficiently In Line
The showcase system made up of Diamant 35, Vesta and two BLSD book stackers was set up via the Tele-Commander. It is really impressing to see how fast the operator can carry out changeovers on the user-friendly touch screen. Another reason for the rapid changeovers is the simultaneous data transfer to all machines. Furthermore, former production settings can be called up for all machines at the same time. If precision-adjustments become necessary, they can be carried out during production.

The shortrun system produced A5 books with flexible covers and 70-mm wide flaps at 2,100 cycles per hour.

Quality-assuring Processes
The Diamant 35 provides the well-known high “Diamant book quality”. Infrared preheating, rounding, double backing, backlining, casing-in – each and every job follows the same, quality-assuring processes as in the Diamant 60. At maximum speed, joint forming and pressing in the new shortrun bookline takes at least 5 seconds – without interruptions and as reliably as ever. This is the way to make first-class books.

High Flexibility
If the production structure at the user changes and high quantities need to be run at high speed, the Diamant 35 can be upgraded to 60 cycles per minute.

The high productive efficiency, the versatile possibilities of use and the first-class book quality have convinced a number of bookbinders already: today, the Shortrun Diamant produces in various European countries, in North and South America, in Asia and in Africa as well.
