The Set-up Wizard of the New Primera Saddle Stitcher Generation Sets the Standard
Modern machines must not only be nicely designed. They must also be set-up and changed over quickly. That is why the new Primera saddle stitcher family from Muller Martini has a set-up wizard which offers easy and practical operator guidance.

Muller Martini developed the new Primera saddle stitcher generation, with its different levels of automation A, C and E, according to the most recent ergonomic guidelines.

“Ergonomics is becoming more and more relevant to the control systems of products, individual machines and whole systems”, says Professor Dr. Thomas Maier, Professor for Technical Design at the University of Stuttgart. “The aim of optimally designed ergonomics must always be to improve operator friendliness.”

That is one reason why Muller Martini developed the new Primera saddle stitcher generation, with its different levels of automation A, C and E, to comply with the most recent ergonomic guidelines. Also, the local operating units and the central touchscreen operation offer a high level of practical convenience, thanks to the set-up wizard. The operation is clearly laid out, simply structured and guides the machine operator in a quick and easy way to the high production results demanded by the market.

The Primera 130 and Primera 140 saddle stitchers have a seven-step set-up wizard.

Practical User Guidance
The idea of a set-up wizard is simple: It should offer the operator easy-to-understand user guidance. This way even machine operators with less professional experience can set-up, gather signatures, stitch, trim and stack a job step by step with the help of an intuitive user interface.

With pictograms the set-up wizard provides a uniform, language-neutral operator language with many advantages and great benefit for the training of machine operators.

With the help of pictograms, the set-up wizard offers a uniform, language-neutral operator language with many advantages and great benefit for the training of machine operators in diverse Muller Martini training centers or on location at the customer. As beneficial side-effect, machine operators and experts can exchange information, and pass on tips and tricks on optimizing net speed at training events.

Efficiently Located Controls
In addition to the central operation, the many locally arranged controls with large display and operator keys – e.g. on the individual feeders as well as on the three-knife trimmer and stacker – are important elements which are efficiently supported by the set-up wizard. Thanks to these the machine operator receives additional support from the intelligent hopper control. For example, for the start-up position of the saddle stitcher, for the positioning of the measuring point of the Semko side thickness measurement, for millimeter-precise settings to position the stitching heads on the stitcher carriage and for the automatic engaging of the feeders with the gathering chain. The vacuum for the suction opening is electrically controlled, which makes manual setting of difficult-to-reach suction heads unnecessary.

If the Primera is connected to the digital workflow through the new Muller Martini workflow system, Connex, then the size-relevant information is automatically read in by the set-up wizard. The higher the level of automation of the new saddle stitcher family, the more effectively the speed of set-up time is increased by the automated adjustments. With the different automation levels A, C and E as well as various production speeds, Muller Martini makes possible a practical investment in the respective Primera saddle stitcher tailored specifically to the respective needs.

The optimizer, integrated in the standard controls of the Primera saddle stitcher, reports and visualizes possible optimization potential.

Optimizer Highlights Potential
The optimizer, integrated in the standard controls of the Primera saddle stitcher, reports and visualizes possible optimization potential. This makes it possible to increase production performance and reduce waste. With this new operating philosophy, many additional innovative and practical new features were realized, surely to make the heart of every machine operator beat faster. For example, a selection of pre-installed job templates can be used. Also available is a signature measuring device to automatically calibrate the signature length, width and thickness (see box).

In addition, on the same floorspace of the predecessor machine, there is space for one more feeder – an additional advantage for the machine operator. Now there is even less distance to travel. One of the first saddle stitchers of the new generation is in use at the bookbindery Brülisauer AG in Gossau, Switzerland. Their Production Manager, Peter Klingler, briefly summarizes the first months of production with the new Primera E140: “The operation of the whole line is very convenient for the machine operator.”

The New Signature Measuring Device Makes it Even Easier to Operate the Primera

The automatic signature measuring device that comes with the Primera 130 and Primera 140 saddle stitchers ensures even faster set-up and make-ready times. Recording the job size data is much simpler and accomplished in next to no time. The operator places the signature against the stop and moves the measuring head so that the measuring device, which is designed according to ergonomic principles, can read in the spine length, signature width and thickness of the product to be stitched. After every measuring operation the values are automatically shown in millimeters on the display. These can then be confirmed or altered and saved.
