Open House 25 and 26 October 2006: Concepta with Semi-automatic Plate Change and Ink Density Control
The Concepta demonstrations at the Muller Martini open house on 25 and 26 October 2006 in Maulburg, Germany, revolved around quality and productivity in the direct mail and security printing sectors. The company premiered its new semi-automatic plate change, an innovation that clearly sets the Concepta apart from its competitors in this performance class.

The Concepta is superbly equipped to meet the tough demands of direct mail and security printing.

The Concepta web offset press excels in high print quality, easy handling and ready accessibility. With a size range extending from 356 mm (14”) to 720 mm (28 1/3”), this model covers a broad spectrum of jobs. It also prints on a wide variety of materials, e.g. laminated paper, paper-like materials, plastic film and aluminum foil. The printed matter can be delivered as roll, cut-sheet or continuous fold.

Thanks to the consistent modular design accommodating up to twelve offset towers and the integration of flexo, screen and digital printing, the Concepta opens the way to customized solutions. At the open house in Maulburg, Muller Martini carried out a job changeover to demonstrate a semi-automatic plate change for the first time. This innovation reduces the already brief changeover times to an even greater extent. The job data was transferred directly via a CIP3 link and preset for the machine.

To reduce waste even further, the Concepta is equipped with a new ink density control system. A sample sheet is automatically scanned into the system. The calculated correction suggestion is accepted by the integrated remote ink control, which uses the calculated values to optimize the ink ducts in all towers. This innovative addition to color control is Muller Martini’s response to the fact that high performance web offset machines today produce superb quality print products once reserved for sheet-fed printing and commercial web offset.

Muller Martini also demonstrated with a 100% print inspection how print quality can be monitored and documented at speeds up to 305 m/min. The system warns the operator of suddenly occurring deviations such as ink splashes and paper flaws, as well as longer term quality shortcomings like toning, colour variations and hickeys. The operator can enter an individual setting for each application defining the point from which an event is detected as an error and the response to that error. The camera is compact, so no increase in machine length was required. This configuration is ideal for pharmaceutical printing and security printing. It is also attracting a growing number of fans in direct mail and label printing, because the 100% quality control and quality documentation reduces complaint costs.
