The partial SigmaLine, as it will be exhibited in Luzern: with SigmaBinder, SigmaTower and SigmaTrimmer.
The SigmaLine from Müller Martini is the first total solution for Book on Demand with which printed products can be efficiently produced, even in ultra-short runs. Paper is printed from a roll, trimmed and folded inline and finished on an integrated perfect binder or saddle stitcher, copy-precise. The job data taken from pre-press is used for fully automatic adjustment of the entire system, by means of JDF.
Efficient Partial Line to be Exhibited As an alternative to the total solution, a partial SigmaLine can also be used for perfect binding. Such a partial line, consisting of a SigmaBinder, SigmaTower and SigmaTrimmer, will be demonstrated under production conditions at the Innovationdays in Luzern.
The partial SigmaLine can be fed book blocks consisting of signatures or loose sheets, both manually as well as automatically, thanks to inline link-up to a variety of digital printing systems. The automated SigmaBinder perfect binder stands for the efficient production of digitally printed products. The books are run at a speed of 1,000 copies per hour and, in an extreme case, can have a run length of only a single copy. The different book data (sizes, thicknesses) for each individual copy are compiled in the binder’s measurement station and used for the automatic, cycle-precise adjustment of all size and thickness related settings in the binder. Product thickness can vary continuously between 1/8” (3 mm) and 1-5/8” (40 mm). The downstream, compact SigmaTower cooling tower ensures that the books are cooled in a space-saving unit and that the glue is ready fro the trim operation. Books are then neatly trimmed on the fully automated SigmaTrimmer. Products are copy-specifically tracked by the intelligent control system; that is, the book data relevant for the trim are provided with every copy, from the perfect binder to the three-knife trimmer. A patented trimming design with three independent cutting elements for the head, foot and front trim changes fully on the fly for sizes and thicknesses, from copy to copy. Still to note is the improved trimming technology in the SigmaTrimmer. Cuts are now made in the swing-cut process, against a cutting stick – just like the high-performance three-knife trimmers from Müller Martini. This achieves a quality in the final products that is equitable to the high demands of industrial book production.
