Graphoprint spends £2 million on Post Press equipment
Graphoprint has been working non-stop to re-equip one of its buildings, which was destroyed by fire at the end of March 2005. The company is now almost ready to install the first of three new presses from Goss – two 5 unit M600D 16 page presses and a 5 unit Sunday 4,000 32 page press, and a range of post press equipment from Muller Martini. Between them, the presses can produce around 5 million 16 page sections a day.

“We needed the best stacking equipment to keep pace with this output, and with the sophistication and performance to match the new generation of presses,” commented Mike Povah, Graphoprint's Works Director, “and this Muller Martini equipment offers exactly what we need”.

Previously, the company had used vertical stackers, but after taking a fresh look at the market, theyselected Muller Martini equipment. Three AvantiPlus log stackers, Exacto rotary trimmers, Forte compensating stackers and an underfloor conveying system will take the output from the presses. Further investment in the bindery includes the addition of another PrimaPlus saddle stitcher from Muller Martini, although that part of the works was not damaged by the fire. “We are going to hit the ground running,” said Mike Povah. “We want to ensure that our customers continue get the highest quality products and service – they have been very supportive over the last few months.”

The reasons for switching to Muller Martini were partly due to the automation offered by the new AvantiPlus log stacker, with its AMRYS automatic make-ready system and which can easily be operated by one person. “We chose Muller Martini equipment after very careful consideration and a number of visits to web printers in the UK and abroad,” commented Mike Povah. “What convinced me was the quality of the logs produced by the horizontal stacker and the ease of operation with minimal operator intervention. The whole process seems to take a lot less effort with the automated Muller stackers, ” he added.

With run lengths varying from 20 thousand to 20 million, the chief requirement was for reliable, robust equipment which can run 24 hours a day without missing a beat. Graphoprint produces mostly brochures and catalogue work, for holiday companies, cosmetic and clothing companies and their five unit machines give them the option to add special varnish coatings or spot colours, which is much appreciated by their clients. The product has to reach the customer in good condition, so the gentle and precise stacking offered by the AvantiPlus and Forte will be of major importance.

Garry Huggett of Muller Martini said “Graphoprint has been a long standing customer of mine on the stitching side and so I'm absolutely delighted they have chosen Muller Martini for press delivery equipment, it is a real vote of confidence in the new AvantiPlus.”
