Muller Martini software increases efficiencies for Chicago Sun-Times

Newspaper installs Muller’s SAM production planning & control system, WinLincs inserter controls, and SAM Tracks warehouse management application

To assist in running its operation more efficiently, the Chicago Sun-Times selected several software applications from Muller Martini Mailroom Systems.  Muller’s SAM production planning & control system has been fully integrated with the newspaper’s existing equipment.  Muller’s SAM Tracks warehouse management system was also installed to bolster SAM’S capabilities by providing complete product receiving and inventory management.  And, Muller’s WinLincs integrated packaging line control system was installed to control all inserter machine functions while directly interfacing with SAM.

“As proven and mature planning and control systems, SAM and WinLincs will make the Chicago Sun-Times more competitive in the marketplace for years to come,” stated Gary Owen, Vice President of Sales for Muller Martini Mailroom Systems.  “By monitoring the performance of the newspaper’s production, our software management solutions will assure precise advertising fulfillment and reliable distribution by zones or regions.  We are excited to expand our partnership with the Chicago Sun-Times and look forward to continuing to grow with them both now and in the future.”

Currently at the Chicago Sun-Times, SAM software is managing the paper’s production center, tying in circulation, advertising and transportation and serving as an accurate and accountable central source of information.  To further assure accuracy and accountability, Muller Martini is in the process of replacing all existing inserter controls at the newspaper’s facility.  WinLincs, which allows operators to define a wide range of functions and also provides comprehensive zoning capability, is enabling the Chicago Sun-Times to streamline production and optimize productivity – even in today’s demanding market characterized by sophisticated distribution schemes and variable production windows.

The Chicago Sun-Times is among the ten most-read newspapers in the United States. The newspaper, which has won eight Pulitzer Prizes, has a weekday circulation of more than 380,000 and is home to such renowned journalists as political commentator Robert Novak, film critic Roger Ebert and sports writer Rick Telander.
