Award-winning Quad/Graphics crew achieves superior production output with Muller Martini Tempo saddle stitcher
Lomira, Wisconsin – In today’s extremely competitive, “must have it yesterday” stitched catalog market, speed and overall output capabilities are the keys to success. At Quad/Graphics, one of the leading printers in the world, an impressive production crew is setting the pace for stitching speed and output utilizing a Tempo saddle stitcher from Muller Martini.

The Quad Tempo is capable of running at a lightening fast 20,000 cycles per hour and the crew was recently recognized with an “Excellence in Finishing” award as the highest producing saddle stitching team among Quad’s arsenal of more than 100 machines.

Quad/Graphics’ LHT-132 team, based in Lomira, Wisconsin, relies on its 36-pocket Tempo saddle stitcher every day for production output that enables Quad to meet the demanding needs of its customers. The operators on the team include: Tony Killinger, Brian Odekirk, Andy Strobel and Russ Yohn, complemented by their supporting crews.

The highly skilled team running LHT-132 produced over 89 million catalogs in 2004, and are on pace to break that mark this year. With 36 selectively fired feeders on their Muller Martini Tempo saddle stitcher, the crew is often running four, five or up to ten different versions of a catalog simultaneously. Quad’s print finishing capabilities, as well as the complexity of output, are further increased by Tempo’s ability to handle multiple blow-in cards and up to 128 lines of inkjet printing.

The Tempo saddle stitcher boasts a modular building block system for optimal production flexibility, enabling many different feeder configurations with a maximum of 40 feeders. Another important capability of the Tempo stitcher, particularly in the catalog and magazine markets, involves selective binding and addressing. Tempo can provide instant and cost-effective personalization on the inside and on the cover of products, along with personalization of stitched insert cards, selective inserting of one or more loose inserts, imprinting of logos and target-specific messages, plus many other possibilities.

Furthermore, automated controls and fast makeready on the Tempo saddle stitcher enable changeovers to be completed very rapidly, resulting in faster job turnarounds while allowing more diverse projects to be scheduled in a shorter amount of time. Tempo also features renowned Muller Martini flying stitching heads to assure precise stitching and to reduce wear.
