In-line book production on the Sigma-Line relies on continuous digital workflow based on JDF/JMF. The JDF needed for each job is generated by the Muller Martini Workflow System, Connex or from an MIS. Connex can be used as a fully functional, stand-alone solution or as an interface to an MIS. With Connex, the JDF for each job can be generated in a few mouse clicks. The raw data, like title, size or page count for example, are imported automatically from the PDF data. Further data such as run length, delivery time or type of paper can be defined or selected.
The following processes of the SigmaLine are automated by JDF data • Settings for the machines • Imposition process • Control of the digital printing system • Generation of bookmarks, barcodes or data matrices
Line controlSigmaControl SigmaControl is the central control element of the entire system. It inter-connects prepress, digital printing and finishing and controls all steps necessary for production. The imported JDF goes through a fully automated preparation process in SigmaControl. Based on the contained information, the corresponding PDF is imposed that takes into account all technical production data such as web width, folding scheme or gathering sequence. The resulting automatically generated print file contains, besides the book content to be printed, also all marks and codings necessary for the production.
SigmaControl can continuously interact with the integrated digital printing press and supply all of the information and commands necessary for its control. New jobs are prepared while the line simultane-ously produces books. The production list is thus continuously fed with new jobs. The workflow system, Connex, can sort the jobs in the production list of the SigmaControl in such a way that the line is used in the most efficient way possible.
Digital printing At the beginning of the production process the integrated digital printing press prints each product in sequence in one step – from the first to last page. Printing systems from various partners and, correspondingly, various print technologies can be made use of. In the SigmaLine, the digital printing press fits seamlessly into the production process, as do all other components originating from Muller Martini. This makes the digital printing press a part of the continuous JDF workflow. |
