With its new Muller Martini Pantera perfect binder, Seaboard Bindery estimates 20% gains in business

Seaboard Bindery, Inc. a 25-person shop located in Woburn, Massachusetts, provides high quality binding and finishing services to various customers throughout the graphics arts industry.  The company prides itself on superlative service and technical proficiency.  Now, with the recent installation of a Muller Martini Pantera perfect binder, Seaboard Bindery has become even more valuable to its customers in terms of production versatility.

“The Pantera satisfies our short- to medium-run needs, binding high quality books with traditional hot melt and PUR glues,” says Frank Shear.  “Together with our other equipment, we cover the gamut from very short run on-demand work to large volume commercial binding. With the addition of the Pantera we estimate that our binding business will grow 20% this year.  And we expect greater gains as we make use of all of Pantera’s functions.”

Besides the machine’s versatility, another reason why Seaboard Bindery chose the Muller Martini Pantera perfect binder is the spectrum of resources that Muller provides.  “Muller Martini has exceptional support and training.  Their sales staff is solutions oriented.  Their service staff works well with their customers and is very helpful.  They do what it takes to get the machine running to our satisfaction.”

The Pantera perfect binder, which is manufactured in the United States at the Muller Martini plant in Newport News, Virginia, runs at up to 4,000 cycles per hour.  In addition to conventional hotmelt binding, Pantera can also process PUR Adhesive (polyurethane reactive).  The use of PUR is becoming an increasingly popular method of perfect binding, due to high pull-resistance values and exceptional layflat characteristics.

The space-saving Pantera perfect binder can handle a broad array of different size jobs and can   be configured with up to 28 feeder stations.  Pantera can also be equipped with a drum cover feeder and an optional crash feeder station for hard cover book production.  High binding quality on the Pantera is ensured through advanced technology in the backbone preparation and glue application area as well as the advanced nipping station, which provides a sharp and square back of the finished book.

The Pantera perfect binder is specifically designed for fast and convenient set-up via its interactive Set-up Assistant Companion and an intuitively-designed touchscreen monitor.  Settings and specs for all stations are displayed for the current production, plus, data for repeat jobs can be saved and re-loaded virtually with the touch of a button.  The Set-up Assistant Companion also monitors various elements such as the glue pot and spinner temperature as well as the glue level, and, it provides automatic glue length control for spine and side gluing.  Pantera can be optionally equipped with AMRYS (Automatic Make-Ready System) technology, further shortening  make-ready times.
